Summary/Abstract: The paper deals with the prominent Serbian actor Strahinja Petrović (1892– 1964), who was born in Belgrade and spent two full decades (1920–1940) in the Croatian National Theatre in Zagreb, where he grew into a strong acting personality. With the creation of the Banovina of Croatia in late August 1939, the attitude of the authorities and the public towards the Serbian population changed, which also affected actors. After several incidents, two reputable Serbian actors, who were the favourites of the Zagreb theatre public, suddenly, without any explanation, cancelled their engagements in 1940. Strahinja Petrović was followed, for the same reasons, by his younger colleague Ljubomir – Ljubiša Jovanović (1908–1971). Such cases have not been recorded either in Serbian or Croatian theatre historiography. The comments of Croatian theatre critics on the achievements of Strahinja Petrović on the stage of the Croatian National Theatre evince an ambivalent attitude of society and theatre art, i.e. a rift in which stage artists found themselves.
