Summary/Abstract: The commentary points out that the socio-political and economic element of the programme of the new EU Commission President, Ursula von der Leyen, clearly aimed to please all the various political factions represented in the European Parliament as well as concerns from east to west and north to south of the European Union. This, together with various institutional constraints, suggests a programme with an overridingly technocratic character, which may be advantageous for middle-sized countries such as the Czech Republic. The conclusion mentions that, with respect to the position of consumers, the priority of the European Commission will be the provision of information for consumers, particularly with regard to transformation processes inherent in both the environmental sphere and the transition to new digital technologies.
