Summary/Abstract: The coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, which spread throughout the world in 2020, has painfully confronted modern human with the experience of death and loss. The threat to one’s own life and the passing of relatives defeated by a terminal illness have become a traumatic fact for many people, forcing them to ask again the question about the meaning of life and death. Can this question be addressed today from the perspective of existentialism? It was within this philosophical trend that two main approaches were born — atheistic and Christian — proposing a certain way of understanding the condition of a person affected by the drama of death. This article, based on the reflections of selected representatives of both directions and on the method of their systematic analysis, is an attempt to describe the existential situation of man during a pandemic and to answer the question of what the experience of death may bring to his understanding of life. In this context, the article shows the value of the Christian concept of God’s self-giving in Christ.
