Summary/Abstract: Community work is a process for helping people to solve the problems of the local community through joint action so as to improve local living conditions for all concerned. This process usually requires the involvement of professional social workers. Action groups consist of "ordinary people" from the community or groups of people with health or social disabilities, i.e. persons with special needs or people united in the same interests. The goal of community work is to influence social changes in a given location by forming the desired relationships between different groups in the community. In connection particularly with ideological reasons, community work in the Czech Republic has been expanding since the beginning of the 1990s, and the majority of such programmes have been developed by non-governmental non-profit organisations. However, in certain areas of the country, public administration institutions (municipal authorities) have been responsible for initiating change in the community.
