Summary/Abstract: The article deals with the issue of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs’attempt to respond to the Root-Takahira agreement and work out the position that Russia should take towards it. This was to be achieved through consultations with the ambassadors to Japan and the United States of America - Mikołaj Malewski-Malewicz in Tokyo and Roman Rozen in Washington. Both ambassadors analyzed the political situation in the Far East which resulted from the Root-Takahira agreement. However, they differed on the issue of Russia’s joining the agreement. Malewski-Malewicz pointed out that itwould be possible to join it, but only to a limited extent – excluding the partof the agreement that applied to China. Rozen, in turn, believed that joining the agreement in such a limited extent would be badly received in the USA,whereas complete participation would be badly received in China. In the caseof Rozen, it can be noted that he was a supporter of the tripartite agreementbetween Russia, China and the US, which he advised in his statement. An important element drawing attention in the letters from both ambassadors was the issue of Russia’s attitude towards China. They both pointed to the need of taking into account the Chinese people’s sense of national dignity and suggested strengthening mutual relations.Considering the further actions of Russian diplomacy, it can be concludedthat the issue of joining the Root-Takahira agreement was not discussed further. The focus was on strengthening relations with Japan and China through bilateral agreements.
