Summary/Abstract: To resolve a dispute such as the one between North Macedonia and Bulgaria entails engaging into the complexities of what constitutes an identity. The „phenomenology“ of a national Self, which has its collective and individual form, cannot be „rectified“ as it cannot be wrong. It may be grounded into historiographical narratives filled with falsity, and yet not be false in and of itself. I propose to look at the phenomenon of the national self juxtaposed to historiographies that can and should indeed undergo revision in the name of science rather than politics. As for politics, a lot should be done to achieve the cultural conflict resolution at the core of the issue, but its success is premised on the acknowledgement the phenomenology presented in this essay.
