Intra- and Extra-Linguistic Innovations in Udmurt (Addenda to the Areal Relations of the Languages in the Volga-Kama Region)

Summary/Abstract: Intra- and extra-linguistic innovations in Udmurt are discussed. The focus lies on the linguistic phenomena engendered by the impact of the neighbouring Turko-Tataric languages. Those phenomena include certain phonetic changes, borrowed derivational suffixes, the so-called izafet-constructions, agreement in attributive constructions, and composite verbs. Similar developments in the Komi, Mari and Mordvin languages are pointed out.
