The Cantacuzino’s Family Chronicle and The Chronicle of Matei Basarab

Summary/Abstract: The development of the Romanian historical writing in the second part of the 17th century and the first part of the 18th century is not enough known. One of the most important chronicles of Wallachia is the one called – by the modern historians – The Cantacuzino’s Family Chronicle (Letopisețul Cantacuzinesc). The present essay – part of a monographic approach – emphasises the historical context in which was conceived the main written source of that narrative: The Chronicle of Matei Basarab.
