Summary/Abstract: The subject in question refers to the use, between August 1942‑August 1944, in the workforce of Jiu Valley mining, of Soviet prisoners of war, which were either in Romanian or German captivity. The use of Soviet prisoners in the workforce was considered a necessary means of diminishing the workforce drought, a permanent reality, now accentuated, as the Romanian State authorities demanded a constant increase in coal production, necessary for maintaining the functioning of rail transport and, implicitly, the needs of the Romanian Army involved in the anti‑Soviet war. The maximum that we know of of Soviet prisoners quartered in the Vulcan nr. 9 Prison Camp, specially built for this purpose, and in the subcamps of Petroşani, Petrila, Aninoasa, Lupeni, Lonea/Jieţ, would be, on the 3rd of May 1943, of 2.251 people.
