Summary/Abstract: The aim of the study is to attempt to present a synthesis of the process of shaping the system of early education and care for children up to the age of three in the Polish lands throughout history (until te political transformation in 1989). The author briefly presents the concept of education and care in the home environment, indicates the problem of taking care of children by nurses and nannies, analyzes the organization and the functioning of first shelters, nurseries and aid campaigns directed at a mother and child. The study also focuses on philanthropic activities in the process of protecting the life and health of children, as well as the importance of RGO and RTPD in the process of childcare. The last fragment presents the situation of a working woman and a child up to three years old in the Polish People’s Republic.
