The Avant-garde of Materialist Humanities: Stefan Żółkiewski’s Theoretical and Ideological Debatesin “Kuźnica”

Summary/Abstract: The paper discusses the development of Stefan Żółkiewski’s theoretical and ideological position in the second half of the 1940s, analyzing his most important publications in “Kuźnica”. The author attempts to define the components of Żółkiewski’s theoretical habitus in relation to specifictrends in contemporary humanities, such as phenomenology,formalism,neo-positivism, idealism or neotomism. In this way, the paper identifies thebasic components of Żółkiewski’s scientific worldview (or,to use Henryk Markiewicz’s term “ideogems”), which in the Polish humanities of that time correspond to Marxism.
