Lexical Synonymy in Polish Lexicology and Lexicography

Summary/Abstract: This paper focuses on the significance of studies on lexical synonymy in the Polish linguistic tradition. At the same time it signalises some discrepancies, one can notice, while analysing various scholars. It reminds us the ways of defining lexical synonymy connected with the directions of research in contemporary semantics. This paper shows us also the issue of synonymy in the lexicon’s practice: we can find here several authors of lexicographic works, the way they understood and used synonymy in dictionaries. The text mentions some contemporary proposals to understand synonymy. They refer to cognitive linguistics and asks about the role of synonymy understood in this way in the studies on the linguistic image of the world.
