Crumbs of the Real: Politics after Postmodernism

Summary/Abstract: The article attempts to describe and explain in psychoanalytic terms the modern crisisof liberal democracy and the triumph of populism by extensively referring to JacquesLacan’s concept of the Real. Sowa argues that the events of recent decades contradictpost-structuralist theses about the symbolic order’s autonomy and the possibilityof deferring the encounter with the Real. Moreover, Sowa maintains that we shouldinterpret populism’s successes as an unwanted – though inevitable – consequence ofthe political representation model prevalent in modern parliamentarism. Finally, Sowaoutlines the possible shape of a radically democratic political system based on a lottery,which Sowa interprets as the right way to map the Real of modern politics, in the spiritof Lacan’s psychoanalysis and speculative realism.
