Summary/Abstract: Vincas Kisarauskas ( born on March 1st, 1934 in Augmėnai (Baisogala rural district), died on October 27th,1988 in New York (buried in Vilnius) was a Lithuanian painter, graphic artist, and stage designer. In 1959, he graduated from the Lithuanian Art Institute. From 1965 to 1988, he taught at the Čiurlionis Art School in Vilnius. On the fringes of official art, Kisarauskas emerged as one of the most talented and influential leaders of Lithuanian "silent" modernism, which contributed much to the consolidation of anti-Soviet artists and the emergence of new European tendencies in Lithuanian art of the 1960s and 1970s. Kisarauskas created many thematic compositions, portraits, etchings, assemblages, and scenographies. His works are characterized by non-conformism, a turn to the tragic post-war history, a tendency towards deformation of artistic imagery, expression, constructive thinking, inner drama, and existential motifs. Due to his anti-sovietism, he was in the disfavor of the authorities, and since 1959 he had only four individual exhibitions in Lithuania and the two ones abroad (Voerså, Denmark, 1971 and Lipno, Poland, 1983). Kisarauskas' real contribution to the history of Lithuanian art became apparent only in posthumous retrospective solo exhibitions in Vilnius (2002, 2011, 2014, 2015, 2016) and Kaunas (2009, 2019). His works are kept in museums and private collections of various countries.
