The Drama of Vincas Kisarauskas's Pictorial Poetics

Summary/Abstract: The article analyzes the diverse creative expressions of Vincas Kisarauskas, one of the most prominent representatives of the Lithuanian "silent modernism" of the 1960s-1980s. It discusses the origins of his work, the versatility of his artistic expression, his tendency to experimentation, the most characteristic features of his artistic style, his relations with the official Soviet ideology, various modernist art movements, pop art, and the work of the adored Čiurlionis. Particular attention is paid to Kisarauskas' social activism, and his ambition to bring Lithuanian art, which was isolated during the Soviet era, back into the current process of global art development. The article then considers Kisarauskas' decades-long cultural mission of consolidating the nationalistically oriented Lithuanian artists of different generations for the development of national art. The most important themes of the artist's works, their means of artistic expression, and the metamorphosis of his artistic style are briefly discussed. Kisarauskas is regarded as one of the central figures of our modernizing non-conformist art of the last three decades of the 20th century.
