Summary/Abstract: Literary history is most often the history of the canon or a series of supposedly top literary works from a certain time period compiled into the canon. The literary canon and its study go hand in hand with the study of urban structures and literary-artistic centers. In contrast, regional literatures and the quantity of other literary publications of the time, which far exceed the canon, remain largely ignored, resulting in only abridged and distorted, fictitious and inaccurate descriptions of the period. This article argues for a proactive literary history above and beyond the canon as well as for an interdisciplinary and intercultural study of the literatures of the Baltic Sea region.
