Summary/Abstract: In order to explain the decisions made by China within the international system, we must also pay attention to the themes of Chinese general strategic interests, giving us a wider context of the observable behavior of the state in the moments when it projects its elements of hard and soft power. This paper aims to assess both the development of the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) and its most important constituent "pieces", together with the capabilities and military budgets allocated over the years, in order to better understand how China pursues its strategic interests globally. The research results reveal a relevant positive correlation between GDP growth and increasing annual military budgets allocated to the PLA. Empirical analysis of the data also found an interdependence of growth between China's military budgets and its strategic competitors’, such as India, Russia and South Korea. At the same time, China's military budget appears to be unaffected by the evolution of Japan's and Australia's military budgets.
