Summary/Abstract: As is known, studies on teaching Turkish as a mother tongue and as a foreign language are not only a matter of language but also multidimensional in terms of diplomacy, history, culture, and politics. On the one hand, the works of foreign writers or researchers who produce works in Turkish in different countries, and on the other hand, the works of those who live outside Turkey and speak different dialects of Turkish shed light on many issues such as historical events, cultural values, especially language, between countries. This role played by each literary work constructs a bridge. Indeed, the poems written by Mohammed Hussein Shahriyar, an important poet of Azerbaijani Turkish Literature and Iranian Literature, known in the Turkic world for his poem “Salute to Heydar Baba”, can be considered within this framework. His poems written in Turkish and Persian and his references to both Turkish and Iranian poets in these poems can be read as the effect of language in strengthening the ties between cultures. His references to the culture, folklore, social and political life of the geography he lived in, the figures who left their mark on Turkish poetry from Yahya Kemal to Akif, from Fuzuli to Sabit, and the important names of Persian literature such as Hafez and Firdavsi serve as an important source text. The fact that he is influenced by some Turkish poets in his poems, which can be considered an extension of the poetry tradition fed from different sources of the Turkish world, can be said to have a great impact on his intellectual world. This situation can also be indicated by the influence of Persian literature. In this study, Shahriyar's references to the famous poets of Turkish and Persian literature in his poems were analyzed through the document analysis method. Thus, it was aimed to contribute to the literature with some inferences about the significance of the poet in terms of Turkish and Persian literature in general and the function of Shahriyar's literary texts in teaching Turkish as a mother tongue and foreign language in particular and how they can be utilized.
