Summary/Abstract: The status of immigrants in European countries has been directly influenced by the colonial past of many of the states on the continent and the Orientalist perspective that emerged in relation to it, and they are ultimately positioned as the other of a common European identity that is assumed to extend from the past to the present within the framework of their different ethnic origins, religions and languages. Under the influence of this perception, immigrant minorities experience various problems in terms of their integration into majority host societies and may also be subjected to restrictive immigration policies and citizenship practices based on the sovereign rights of states.
