Summary/Abstract: In this article various illustrations of the days Flower and Monkey in the codices Borgia and Vaticanus B are examined. It is argued that the patron deities of these days, Xochiquetzal and Xochipilli, are connected mythologically to the figures in the accompanying pictures, namely an old woman grinding corn and a nobleman catching a fish. Following a critical review of extant interpretations, the focus turns to the maize mythology of the classical Nahua and the contemporary peoples of the Gulf of Mexico. Particularly prominent are the roles of the maize hero, his mother and his grandmother (or, in some versions, his adoptive mother). In the case of the day Flower, the speci; c role of the grandmother allows a direct connection with the image; in the case of the day Monkey, the connection with mythology is established primarily through the motif of fish catching.
