Summary/Abstract: The following is a tribute to the eminent Bulgarian musicologist Professor Elena Toncheva on the twelfth anniversary of her passing and on the occasion of her 90th birthday. It revisits a topic on which she was the acknowledged authority: the Polyeleos. In two parts, with musical settings of the Polyeleos from the 12th-century Blagoveshchensky Kondakar as the focus, the first part surveys early Slavic chanting practices rooted in the cathedral rituals of the Byzantine capital. The second part with setting of the Polyeleos from a 15th-century Balkan manuscript, considers the continuation of older practices in those later sources that appeared in the wake of liturgical reforms.
