Approach to Future Classification of Ornaments in Bulgarian Traditional Rural Song

Summary/Abstract: Classification of ornaments in Bulgarian traditional song is a consequence rather than a main research goal for the Bulgarian ethnomusicologists. After researching the achieved results in the field, it became clear that for classification factors are considered both musical components (by Aleksandar Motsev) as well as general regional features (by Nikolay Kaufman) of the ornaments. Based on the Kaufman’s research and through the prism of the understanding of ornaments as an improvisatory structure the author of this text looks for new possibilities for systematization of ornaments. Thus, the building stages of the improvisational process are outlined as “model – treatment – interpretation” and their interrelations are observed on the musical time-metatime vector. As a result of that the proposed classification is focused on the possibility of dividing the ornaments by their temporal manifestation in a conjunction with the non-temporal concepts of the model, where model is understood as a mental collection of intonations and rhythmic “gestures” in the consciousness of the performer before it is embodied in a sounding ornament. Consequently, as a classification factor is taken the concentration of ornamental events (in the model) in a time unit (the sounding realizations of the ornament), which outlines three main groups of ornaments: ornamentsonoristics, ornament-figuration and ornament-sonoristics-figuration.
