Summary/Abstract: Folklore is very important for one country. It’s authentic by itself and we should nurture and present it everywhere, so we can preserve our identity and tradition. There are many advantages of this field but, there are many disadvantages as well. Mainly in Macedonia a big problem is financing the culture projects. As the years go by, there are less cultural events and field studies. All of the data that is stored in the archives, that includes recordings that go as far back as the 19th century and can be easily gone one day, are not getting digitized fast enough because there’s not enough budget for that. Many of the traditions and customs are lost because the number of the people that knew them and passed them on to the next generations, decreases over time. Many of the villages that were rich with tradition are abandoned, and the customs are forgotten. There is pressure from the neighboring countries who want to appropriate our traditions (songs, dances) and our customs, and write them as their own. The country doesn’t show interest in investing in the folklore of its own people. The current government is turned towards good neighborly relations and it’s prepared to accept any conditions even if it means it will pay the price of losing its own nation’s identity. Not enough learning of the Macedonian folklore tradition in schools is a big disadvantage for the younger generations. They don’t develop awareness for their identity because the folklore tells the history of one nation. Although folkloristics and its researchers are facing big challenges, there’s still hope. The Institute of Folklore “Marko Cepenkov” in Skopje, keeps investing to preserve this study by organizing field research, archiving all the data, organizing symposiums and presentations. The folklore ensembles continue to nurture the folklore by touring all over the world, performing concerts with traditional dances and songs and working with younger generations to educate them through participating in the ensemble’s activities and performance.
