Summary/Abstract: The article aimed to examine to what extent the social (advisory) councils operating in Poland can be considered a social accountability mechanism. The author refers to the theoretical assumptions of social accountability, which constitutes one of the forms of accountability of public authorities. Additionally, the paper presents the peculiarities of social councils, which are well-known, highly institutionalized, and formalized collegial bodies operating worldwide for many years. The article presents the results of qualitative research (semi-structured interviews) among members of three types of social councils, i.e., youth councils, senior citizens’ councils, and councils for people with disabilities. The analysis included 46 interviews with their members conducted in selected cities with county (districts) rights in Poland.
