Summary/Abstract: THE GEOPOLITICAL IMPORTANCE OF THE GREATER BLACK SEA REGION IS DETERMINED BY THE IMPRESSIVE NATURAL RESOURCES THAT THIS AREA POSSESSES AND BY THE GEOGRAPHICAL POSITIONING AT THE CROSSROADS BETWEEN EUROPE AND ASIA. AT THE SAME TIME, THIS AREA IS STRATEGICALLY IMPORTANT, AS IT IS A BRIDGE THROUGH WHICH ENERGY RESOURCES FROM THE CASPIAN SEA AREA CAN BE TRANSPORTED TO WESTERN EUROPE. FROZEN CONFLICTS IN THE REGION THREATEN ITS STABILITY AND SECURITY, AS WELL AS REGIONAL COOPERATION. MOREOVER, THEY GENERATE A NUMBER OF OTHER ISSUES AFFECTING GEOPOLITICS AND REGIONAL SECURITY, SUCH AS UNCONVENTIONAL THREATS. HE EUROPEAN UNION AND NATO HAVE DEVELOPED CERTAIN POLICY INSTRUMENTS AIMED AT ENSURING STABLE SECURITY IN THIS TENSE AREA. A MORE PRAGMATIC INVOLVEMENT OF INTERNATIONAL BODIES IS NEEDED TO ADDRESS THEM, SO THAT NATURAL RESOURCES AND THE POTENTIAL FOR REGIONAL COOPERATION CAN BE MAXIMIZED.
