Summary/Abstract: Cultural and linguistic diversity is a cornerstone of the European Union. Member states devote special attention to protection of minorities and develop policies to improve minority rights, privileges and position. This article demonstrates that in one of the old member states of the European Union – Italy – rights of minorities are not sufficiently respected. In comparison with Italian minority in Slovenia, Slovenian minority in Italy does not enjoy the same rights. This article shows that despite the geographical proximity, legal basis for minority rights, political competence and language policy in Italy is not as adequate as in Slovenia to the EU principles.
