CYBORG BODIES–RECONSTRUCTION OF THE BODY THROUGH PERFORMANCE ART: STELARC SAMPLE

Summary/Abstract: The industrializing world, rapid global transformations, advancement of industry and the dazzling progression of technology had reflection on the field of art as it did on every other field. The art reinterpreted has now broken its traditional molds, overflown from two-dimensional surfaces and conceptualized with the influence of different materials, and thus the expression facilities of the artistic discourse have gone through a metamorphosis. In the aftermath of the modern art the notion that body should be redesigned has been introduced as one of the dominant functions of the art phenomenon. Hence the cyborg concept that we come across within this context have appeared in the art practices of the performance artists in contemporary art. Cyborg forming a unity with the combination of the words cybernetic and organism which found its place within art in the form of incorporating inorganic items and technological devices into human body was coined as a concept in the year 1960 by neurophysiologist and neuroscience specialist Manfred Clynes. This research aims to analyze the artistic actions of Stelarc who is among the contemporary artists who blend their art with medical technological forms and who also by placing cybernetic tools onto their bodies reconstruct them and build cyborg bodies. Continuing to work towards transforming the body into a new reconstructable form and making an effort to experience the pain and strengthen the physical body with the aim of discovering its limits, the artist has used his own body as an art object, altered his body with the idea that the human body almost became obsolete and abandoned and in his own words turned it into a cyborg body.
