Summary/Abstract: When on 23 August 1944, under unexpectedly propitious political and military circumstances, the Romanian Communist Party (RCP) emerged from the underground to a governing position, it was a ridiculous political organisation, numerically speaking. The issue of the exact numerical size of the communist party after it was outlawed was carefully eluded after 1945 in the public statements of its leaders, as well as in monographs, studies, and press article published in the Romania.
