Summary/Abstract: On September 10, 1955, during the Soviet-West German negotiations occasioned by the visit to Moscow of Chancellor Konrad Adenauer, N. Khrushchev, at that time First Secretary of the Soviet Communist Party, invited his guest to a walk in the garden and told him: “Do you realize that communist China has already over 600 million inhabitants? Each year adds twelve million more; and they all live on a handful of rice. What will come out of this? Certainly, we are in a position to cope with all these tasks, but it is rather hard. That is why I’m asking you to lend us a helping hand. Help us solve the Chinese problem!” Adenauer noted later that Khrushchev “hesitatingly, added: ‘the American one, too’”.
