Summary/Abstract: Emerging as a reaction to the rise of communism and the massive Jewish influence on all levels of economic, social, cultural and political life, the Legionary Movement successfully penetrated the Romanian interwar society, rallying very large portions of the population, from students to priests and military personnel. It is a fact that some of the Romanian Royal Army high and low ranking officers both from regular service and from reserves as well as some enlisted men were active members or sympathisers of the Legionary Movement; this was due to the Movement’s nationalistic ideology, paramilitary organisation and soldierly values. Attempting (for the first time) to systematically exploit the data included in military archives, the paper presents a synthesis of the Legionary Movement’s organisational structure and analyzes the elements that betray its paramilitary nature: the centralised command, the units, the flag, the oath, the drill, the uniforms, the ranks, the decoration.
