Summary/Abstract: The article is devoted to Maria Konopnicka's short story Na rynku. This is a work that has been rather overlooked in interpretations so far. Konopnicka was an outstanding novelist, her works are masterpieces of European novellas of the 19th/20th centuries. In the prose analyzed, she shows, in reportage-like detail, the realities of life in 19th-century Poland, and, at the same time, engages in a dialogue with Adam Mickiewicz’s ballad Romantyczność. The novelist highly valued literary works and the person of Mickiewicz. She analyzed his work in literary criticism. The interpreted text proves the modernity of Konopnicka, who sees the tragedy of the insane woman in an existential perspective and uses categories important for the Anthropocene.
