Summary/Abstract: The Securitate was mainly a repressive institution created to totally and radically transform the Romanian society, relying on such methods as: mail censorship, search without a warrant, listening to civilians’ conversations on the phone in their apartments or in public places. Gradually, from traditional methods to strategies of manipulating people and control through terror simulation, the Securitate succeeded in creating the image of an omnipresent, omnipotent repressive institution. Beyond its mythical evil side, this institution also proved useful for Romania under certain circumstances: counterintelligence, military intelligence, fighting sabotage and terrorism.
