Summary/Abstract: The Romanian Navy was treated, after the act of August 23, 1944, as an enemy by the Soviet troops and fleet that penetrated the Romanian zone of the Danube and the Black Sea, so the Soviets sank some of the ships and took others as a war prize. The surprise attack against the Romanian navy led to tragic situations and it was only the intervention of Rear-Admiral Horia Macellariu, the commander of the Sea Naval Forces, that saved part of the fleet. The Romanian navy was saved owing to an initiative to put it under the Soviet navy command. Until the armistice was signed, a large portion of the Romanian fleet was captured by the Soviets, not only military ships, but also the Romanian commercial fleet; that loss affected the Romanian state for many years.
