Summary/Abstract: Many historical questions can be solved by the elemental analysis of coins. For coins we can study their fineness, debasement and adulteration, their fabrication and provenance. To solve these questions we must define criteria determining the method of analysis to be adopted in each historical case. The paper presents the results of metrological analyses, optical microscopy and XRF spectrometry applied in the field of numismatics, performing the characterization of some Romanian coins from the XIX-XX centuries. The study was based on the analysis of 12 Romanian coins representing issues from the period of the principality/kingdom of Romania under the leadership of King Carol I and King Michael I. The results obtained through XRF investigations showed that these coins were made from a binary or ternary alloy based on silver. The microscopic appearance of the surface of the coins provides important information regarding the state of preservation of the coins.
