Summary/Abstract: This article deals with the difficulties encountered by students in academic writing as they struggle to find the means of producing high-quality texts. Studies show that regardless of the discipline, students must create a new identity both as (novice) writers and as competent members of a disciplinary community. When writing in a foreign language, the hindrances increase in number. The article identifies several of the factors which influence the quality of academic texts, which derive from the identity crises faced not only by students but also by professional writers, such as the practices of academic writing, cultural differences specific to academic communities and the challenges brought about by the particularities of writing in native and foreign languages.
