Summary/Abstract: A central element in Alfons Cervera’s Las voces fugitivas (2013) is recovering the historical memory of the Spanish War and the Francoist dictatorship. This work, the so-called “memory series,” contains five novels which narrate the stories and testimonies of the habitants living in the fictional village Los Yesares, mainly during the war and the post-war era. In these novels, different attitudes towards memory can be observed, which cause either a successful or unsuccessful transmission of the past through generations. This paper investigates the thematic and formal representation of generational memory in three of those novels, namely El color del crepúsculo (1995), La noche inmóvil (1999) y Aquel invierno (2005). By using the concept of “postmemory” (Hirsch) as well as the concept of “affiliative memory” (Faber), which focuses specifically on the Spanish context, this paper seeks to demonstrate the ways in which these theoretical concepts are represented in the novels through motives including memory, oblivion, violence and fear. Thereby, the theoretical framework, combining two concepts, shows different intergenerational dynamics of memory. Furthermore, this paper argues how these intergenerational memorialistic dynamics are represented in the novels.
