Summary/Abstract: In the days that followed the event of August 23, 1944, Romania got back the civic freedoms and the institutions and practice of democracy were to be re-established. However, the text of the Armistice signed by Romania with the United Nations was ambiguous, which could leave room for ideological interpretations. Moscow was permanently in control of the process by which the communists took over the government, including through the Allied (Soviet) Control Commission. This material analyzes the means by which the democratic (opposition) press was first subjected to censorship and then banned.
