SOME REMARKS ON THE BEGINNINGS AND CHARACTER OF THE RADICAL PARTУ IN THE 1881 —1883 PERIOD

Summary/Abstract: While treating the developments in the beginning years of the Radical Party in the nineteenth century Serbia, the author raises two relevant issues, namely: (i) the separation and acquiring of independence by tire Radical Party from the socialists and from the progressives, and (ii) the charactei' of the Party, namely, was it at that time, and to what a degree, a genuinely democratic or autocratic, i.e. oligarchic party. While the process of separation from the Progressive Party has been accompliched relatively in a fast way and, one could say, quite naturally, the relationship towards the socialists, namely towards the group of »Svetozarians« was considerably more difficult and more painful. The Radical Party has been proud, almost until the end of its existence, of Svetozar Marković as its founding father, although it had broken off from him and his teachings rather early. Although it seemed that inits internal relations the Radical Party at the time adhered particularly to democratic centralism, even then the centralism was stronger than the will of the members. This internal policy led at the end to taking over by the Party leader Nikola Pašić the entire decision- -making power.
