Summary/Abstract: The aim of the article is to determine the relationship between the level of midwife care and the infant mortality at the end of the 19th century in Galician poviats. The data comes from the National Statistical Offi ce in Lviv. They were recalculated and presented in the form of tables and choropleth maps. The more favourable rate of midwives occurred in Eastern Galicia. Midwives contributed to a more accurate registration of stillbirths, the number of which was decreasing, which proves the eff ectiveness of professional care. The mortality of newborns was increased by the lack of such care and not by the fact that they were born out of wedlock.
