Summary/Abstract: Thirty years after the dissolution of Yugoslavia, many border disputes in this part of the Balkans remain pending. The author examines individual cases of unresolved border disputes in the Western Balkans and the regional impacts of territorial disputes on political relations, stability, security, and EU integration of the region. Noting that unresolved border disputes reflect negatively on the situation in the region, the author advocates that the conclusion of interstate border agreements would contribute to the long-term stability of the region — reduce tensions in bilateral political relations, eliminate speculation about territorial claims toward neighboring states, speed up European integration and improve living conditions of the local population in the border areas. To complete this process, the political will of decision-makers in the region is necessary, as well as the more intensive engagement of the international community.
