Summary/Abstract: The paper interprets Bong Joon-ho’s 2019 film Parasite as a social horror. Such an aproach stems partially from the many discussions about Parasite as a work of social critique. I view the house of the rich family — the Parks —as an object central to the narrative. Both the Parks’ house and the whole world around it are structured in layers that organize the life of all the characters. The layers are interpreted as material (the house, the city), social (lower and higher strata) and symbolic (material layers symbolize social stratifi cation). Moving between the layers is defi ned as haunting. I claim that if Parasite is a form of social critique, then it is not aimed at any particular “layer” of society as such (e.g. the rich), but at the layered structure as a whole. In the second part of the paper this analysis is used to view Parasite against various stages of Modernity and their corresponding forms of ideology.
