A nurse of the digital era. The generic function of feminitives

Summary/Abstract: While the generic function of masculine personal nouns is a well-known and thoroughly described phenomenon, there have been no studies devoted to this role of feminine nouns, such as pielęgniarka ‘female nurse’ or przedszkolanka ‘female kindergarten teacher’. This paper fills this gap and examines the use of feminitives in this function and its consequences. It also reports on a questionnaire study the results of which point to the participants’ uncertainty as to the choice of the generic masculine or feminine nouns and its dependence on the subjects’ gender and the morphological structure of words.
