Summary/Abstract: The identity of children’s characters established on the basis of two cultural determinants – popular culture and artistic expression, is analyzed in the selected Croatian children’s novels of the nineties of the last century. Both impacts, present on the content and forming level, significantly participate in co-creation of children’s characters identity. Various forms of popular culture (TV, comics, movies, commercials, games) contribute to more relaxed approach to the selected material, with certain element of humor, while a higher degree of seriousness in the approach to the selected topic is noticed in the novels whose characters are building their identity influenced by artistic expression (painting, sculpture, architecture, literature).
