Summary/Abstract: Dialectal diversity of the Croatian linguistic area is linguistic and cultural richness and an essential component of the Croatian linguistic identity. Contemporary globalization processes threaten linguistic diversity in general, and on the level of small cultures. Endangered language idioms with small number of speakers strengthen the need to work on preservation of linguistic diversity. With the inauguration of the national languages in the 19th century dialectal idioms come to second place, and become less desirable, less important than the national language. Do Croatian schools promote sociolinguistic activism? What are the students’ opinions about the dialect? The paper will try to give answers to these questions with the background of contemporary sociolinguistic considerations.
