Summary/Abstract: The Republic of Serbia as a transitional country is burdened with numerous problems. In this state of affairs in the country, almost every aspect of women's safety is threatened. Great scarcity and poverty characterizes certain layers of the population, which represents a suitable ground for discrimination based on gender. There are frequent cases that women's rights are violated and that they are victims of various forms of gender-based violence. The forms of this violence can be: domestic violence, sexual violence, economic violence, human trafficking and the like. Women who are forced to flee due to unforeseen circumstances, as well as temporarily displaced persons, are in particularly difficult circumstances. This includes women who are in return status. We should also take into account the percentage of domestic violence, which is not negligible, both in the past and today. This paper focuses on the theoretical aspect of gender equality in the Republic of Serbia. I conclude that despite progress in establishing the principle of gender equality, there is still a long way to effective equality.
