Summary/Abstract: The times we live in now are affected by various crises, and man, striving to overcome them, looks towards the inner universe. The depths of this inner universe were crossed, through prayer, by the Desert Fathers, who can be teachers for today’s man, even if they lived in a different historical context. The objective of their life was self-knowledge, getting close to God, spiritual growth, and the main means to reach all that was prayer. From success, but also from failure, they draw rules regarding the inner life, arousing to this day a real interest, even from the field of psychiatry and psychopathology. The inner life is not reserved for an exclusive group of specialists, but is present in everyday life, at the center of human existence, but the Desert Fathers can enlighten us, precisely because they have given more time to understanding the suffering of the soul. Following the example of the Desert Fathers and feeling uncomfortable with the restlessness of today’s hyper-connected world, it would not hurt to set aside more time to prepare for our encounter with God. We will gradually discover that prayer can one day become one of the privileged moments. The meaning of continuous prayer, expressed through Jesus prayer, is to open not only the mind, but also the heart, to the divine Presence. Prayer is done in silence, and the devil does not like silence. The new media are destructuring factors of what the spiritual tradition of Eastern Christianity calls hesychasm, naturally lived fully by monks, but necessary for any thorough spiritual life
