Confidence and Power Sources of Individuals Engaging in Suicidal Behavior

Summary/Abstract: This study was produced from the data obtained as a result of interviews with people who applied to Elazig Fırat University Hospital and their relatives as a result of suicidal behavior between August 1 and October 31, 2021. In the related research, which was planned qualitatively and used purposive sampling technique, 31 cases were reached and a total of 55 people were interviewed, 21 of whom were suicide attempters. In this study, the effects of these factors on suicidal behavior are evaluated by making use of research data on the power sources that people have, the methods of coping with problems, the networks they are involved in and the bonds they establish based on confidence. According to research data; "loss of trust and fear, attachment behavior disorders, chronic diseases, responsibility for care, challenging characteristics of transitional periods, addiction, unresolved family problems, histories of neglect and abuse, economic problems, and beliefs that the request for help will not be met or will be used against them" these are the main problems that limit social life and help resources of people who commit suicidal behavior. Hiding or denying the need for help for various reasons, lack of equipment to cope with crisis situations and lack of a supportive environment complicates the problems, complicates the solution and increases the risk of suicide by deepening the feelings of hopelessness and loneliness. It is thought that this study, which reveals the need for medical and public health social work practices in the intervention processes related to suicide, will contribute to the planning of preventive services related to suicide and the assessment of suicide risk.
