Drug addiction – a sin against human nature and the mission of the Church in the world

Summary/Abstract: The fact that more and more people are talking about the harmfulness of drug addiction, respectively the use of drugs that prove to be particularly harmful to the physical and moral-spiritual life of man and community, requires the general mobilization of law enforcement, medicine and Church, which is responsible for the salvation of the faithful.The present study aims to show that drug addiction is a dysfunction of behavior and a sin against human nature, which is why, at the beginning, by clarifying the notion, the author highlights the manifestation of the harmfulness of drugs, as well as their destructive consequences, physically, spiritually and socially, for human life. Thus, the initial phase of pleasure is followed by the morbid one and ends with degradation that leads the subject to collapse.The chapter on “The sight of drug addiction” analyzes psychoactive substances according to their effect on consciousness, behavior and mood, dividing them into several categories as follows: 1. Sedatives or depressants: alcohol, barbiturates, minor tranquilizers; 2. Narcotics or opiates: codeine, heroin, morphine; 3. Psychostimulants: amphetamines, cocaine, nicotine, caffeine; 4. Hallucinogens: LSD, Mescaline, Psycholocybin, PCP (Phencyclidine); 5. Psychoactives: cannabis, marijuana, hashish; 6. Ethnobotanical substances.Showing that drug addiction represents a behavioral dysfunction and a sin against nature, they insist on recovery attempts, especially through spiritual therapy.The epilogue of the work directs towards wisdom as discernment meant to cultivate the values of the human soul permeated by the grace of God.
