The virtues of French marine insurance law

Summary/Abstract: French marine insurance law occupies a privileged place in the Insurance Code, in particular due to its international character, its specificity and the fact that policyholders are professionals who are able to negotiate the terms of their insurance coverage. This article reviews the rules specific to marine insurance, which differ from those applicable to other branches of insurance, whether they result from the provisions specific to the category of "high risks" to which marine insurance is associated or from Title 7 of Book 1 of the Insurance Code which is dedicated to transport. Also, some of the provisions contained in title 7 and applicable to marine insurance contracts are explained, independently of any comparison with other branches of insurance.
