Summary/Abstract: This study attempts a rough estimate of the population size on the territory of North Macedonia in the period of the Principate. The only possible way of making a sensible approximation is to extrapolate the total population size from the existing data of the number and size of autonomous towns. The final part of this equation are the general urbanization rates for the provinces of the Roman Empire, which did not exceed 20% of the total population. This indirect approach to estimating population size will allow us to present the urban geography of our country in the period of the High Empire and will cast light on the general economic and demographic situation in this corner of the Roman Empire. In order to put these numbers in perspective, a comparison will be made between the size of the urban and the overall population in the early Ottoman period.
